From overwhelmed to empowered:  Liam's journey

Liam is 20 months old at the start of ABA therapy at Achieve Behavior Therapy. He presents with no functional communicative or adaptive skills. Liam tantrums to communicate and his "play" consists of lining up matchbox cars or running in circles while flapping his hands.

May 2023

Liam begins making purposeful sounds and recognizing others. He starts pointing to things to request them and with this new skill his tantrums start to decrease. Liam's play skills now include purposeful use of cause-and-effect music toys, playing with a car ramp, and completing inset puzzles.

August 2023

Liam begins interacting with others and forming full words. He displays joint attention skills by pointing to thing to show his therapist, and will orient to see what she is pointing to. His play expands to building simple block structures and putting together train tracks. Mom reports that Liam allowed himself to be transferred from the car into the store without having a meltdown.

November 2023

Liam communicates his needs 90% of the time and can engage in parallel play with peers when supervised by an adult.

December 2024

May 2024

By the support of Achieve Clinical team, Liam is fully toilet trained and is communicating his needs 50% of the time. His tantrums occur much less frequently, and when they do occur, he can often be prompted to communicate instead. When Liam has down time, he enjoys playing with most of the toys in his playroom.

March 2025

Liam reaches his goals and is discharged from therapy. He is signed up for a mainstream Pre-K program for September and is really excited to go.
